When Waylon Smithers made his Simpsons debut, he did so as an African-American character – accidentally. Per the Simpons Wiki, “Smithers was mistakenly animated with the wrong color and was made African American by Gyorgi Peluci, the color stylist. [Director] David Silverman has claimed that Smithers was always intended to be ‘Mr. Burns’ white sycophant,’ and the staff thought it 'would be a bad idea to have a black sub-servient character’ and so switched him to his intended color for his next episode.”

MGM’s iconic moving logo focuses on a lion roaring into camera. (Watch a restored version of it here.) How did they get that shot? As seen in this photo, very carefully.

In 1955, the U.S. government tested the effects of a nuclear weapon by dropping a bomb on a town in Nevada. The carnage was dramatic, as seen above. It would have been tragic, too, had the town been real, but it wasn’t. All the “people” in the fake town, including the one above, were mannequins.

In 1912 and again in 1914-15, items were excavated from Machu Picchu, above, and taken to Yale University to study. The items were supposed to be returned 18 months later but Yale, citing a perceived inability of Peru to keep the items in good condition, retained the artifacts. In November 2010, Yale agreed in principle to return the artifacts to Peru.

The sign above is in English and Welsh. But the Welsh words do not, when translated, match the English. Rather, as explained by this BBC article, it means “I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated.”
The sign maker misunderstood the translator’s “Out of Office” message to be the translation.

Take a look at a strong light source, like a street lamp – and you may notice a rainbow-ish halo glowing around it. The Sun also has those, and, at times, clouds will pass over the halo to create a “fire rainbow” like that one pictured above.
