Maxwell Gruver died after a night of drinking

Ten people are expected to be charged over the fraternity hazing death of a college freshman.

Maxwell Gruver, of Georgia, died after a night of drinking at a Phi Delta Theta frat party at Louisiana State University (LSU).

An autopsy report revealed Gruver had a ‘highly-elevated’ blood alcohol level and traces of THC in his system when he was found on Thursday September 14.

Police launched an investigation into the death of the 18-year-old and warrants were issued for ten members of the fraternity on Wednesday, reports KATC.

Phi Delta Theta closed the LSU chapter with immediate effect following the news.

All other Greek activities have also been suspended at the university.

The frat said in a statement: ‘Phi Delta Theta will continue to support the ongoing investigations by both LSU and local law enforcement and encourage authorities to prosecute those involved to the fullest extent of the law.

‘The fraternity will also continue its internal investigation to completely understand the situation in order to hold all of those who violated its risk management policies accountable for their actions.’

It added: ‘We continue to keep the entire Gruver family in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

‘This incident serves as a stark reminder of why we need to continue to educate our undergraduates on the dangers of alcohol, hazing, and be constantly vigilant to ensure our risk management policies are fully implemented.’

Bob Biggs, executive vice president and CEO of Phi Delta Theta, said the frat had implemented booze-free housing to address the issue of alcohol abuse.

He added: ‘This tragedy furthers our belief that one of the biggest problems on college campuses today is the abuse and misuse of alcohol.’
