In pictures: Clashes at tuition fees protest
Demonstrators have clashed with police in central London after what began as a peaceful protest against government plans to treble tuition fees and cut university funding in England descended into angry scenes.
Tens of thousands of students and lecturers took to the streets to protest. Big university cities including Liverpool, Newcastle and Birmingham were represented.
The march began peacefully but by mid-afternoon protesters began setting fire to placards outside the Conservative Party headquarters in Westminster. This photo was sent in by student Sarah Noorbakhsh.
Demonstrators smashed windows of a building in Millbank in Westminster.
Protesters then stormed the building. Some took over the foyer, while others headed to the roof terrace.
Riot police were called in. The crowd responded to the heavy police presence with loud booing, screaming and chanting.
The National Union of Students said the scuffles involved only a tiny minority of the thousands of demonstrators.
Missiles were thrown at the police, injuring some officers. London Ambulance Service said a number of patients were being treated for minor injures.
The protest is over government proposals to raise tuition fees from 2012 with universities able to charge up to £9,000 - triple the current cap.
Ministers insist their plans offer a "fair deal for students".
