Motorists are being warned to expect delays because of a security alert in Newry, County Down.

The alert started at about 1400 BST after a caller to a newspaper said a bomb had been left in the city.

An area between the courthouse and an old mill has been cordoned off and Army bomb experts are at the scene.

A number of buildings, including the courthouse, have been evacuated. Some commercial premises in the Sand Mills industrial estate were also cleared.

Motorists have been asked to avoid the area.

A number of roads in the area have been closed. These include: Church Avenue, New Street, Kildare Street, Trevor Hill, Basin Walk, Sugar House Quay, Canal Quay, and Erskine Street.
